The American soul and blues singer Samuel (Mighty Sam) McClain is born on
April 15, 1943 in Monroe, Louisiana. He starts singing at the age of 5 in his
mother's choir. When he is 13 years old, he leaves the parental home and,
together with R & B guitarist Little Melvin Underwood, joins the local R & B
circuit. Moments later, during a performance at the 506 Club in Pensacola,
Florida, Sam is discovered by Papa Don Schroeder, producer, promoter and
owner of a radio station. In 1966 he records his first single, Sweet dreams
and also records singles in the famous Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama.
McClain came into contact with Jerry Wexler at the end of the 1960s. But the
records he records for Atlantic and Malaco do not become a commercial
success. In 1975 McClain moves to Nashville and in 1982 to New Orleans. It
was not until 1986 that he went into the studio again and after that, with
some regularity albums appeared. On June 15, 2015, Sam McClain died in
New Hampshire at the age of 72 from a heart attack.
From Mighty Sam McClain several beautiful albums have appeared in recent
years, even after his death. And last month again, more than three years
after his death, an album came out of him, the acoustic album A diamond in
the rough . On the 11 tracks of this album we hear a great soul singer who is
only accompanied by Pat Herlehy on acoustic guitar, saxophone and flute.
The album opens with the gostel My everything , followed by the slowblues
When the hurt is over . In the groovy soul blues Grooving , Herlehy also adds
the saxophone to his acoustic guitar. Also in the gospel Love's going to find
beautiful saxophone solos can be heard alongside the very nice vocals of
McClain. Where is the love is again a slow blues with a beautiful acoustic
guitar solo, after which McClain shines back vocally in Love me if you want to.
The guitar playing of Herlehy gives Question and Everytime a nice jazzy
feeling and in the beautiful gospel Believe he can also be heard on flute. In
the almost seven-minute soul ballad, McClain is once again in excellent shape
and his voice sometimes reminds me of Bobby 'Blue' Bland. In the final track,
the blues Holy ghost fever , McClain thinks aloud to his father, his mother,
the spirit of rock & roll and that of blues heroes like Muddy Waters, John Lee
Hooker and Howlin 'Wolf.
Conclusion: Mighty Sam McClain is unfortunately no longer among us, but his
music is still happy. A diamond in the rough is a beautifully posthumous
acoustic soul and blues album. I am curious if there is more of this beauty
somewhere in archives.
