Hi Spidey and Gal Friday -- thanks! Sorry I don't have the equipment
to make an audio reply.
I was in Thailand from Christmas '70 through March '72 at the 7th
Radio Research Field Station (colloqually known as the "7th Rock 'n
Roll Freak Show"). Due to Thai broadcast requlations, which limited
foreign broadcasts on Thai soil, we couldn't pick up AFTN from Udorn
AB about 10 klicks down the road so we built our own radio station
(actually it was built by the time I got there). The AM transmitter
was left over from WWII and still was labeled in Japanese. Partway
through my tour, we did a totally unauthorized trip to Vietnam and
"requisitioned" a new FM transmitter, turntables, tape decks, board
and anything else we could scrounge from an AFVN station that was
being deactivated. We worked out of Special Services and were at
least tolerated if not authorized although we were never funded.
Every couple of weeks we would go down to the Air Base around 0100 and
tape the new songs from AFRTS until one night their OIC caught us,
ripped our AF buddies a new one and banned us from the station. Funny
thing; whenever AFTN got above 1.5 watts broadcast power, the locals
cracked down but you could pick us up all over the local 'ville and no
one ever complained. B-)
We called the station WKRR (W & K for the two primary US broadcast
prefixes and RR for Radio Ramasun). This was my first experience
working a board. We put on a Christmas rock concert in 1971, We
taped it and were negotiating with RCA Camden to press some albums but
it fell through, mostly because of the distance. One of the Thai
bands played Hendrix' "Star Spangled Banner" and the Colonel
disapproved. He pulled the plug mid song. The band thought the power
had failed and the drummer tried to fill in 'til it came back.
Somewhere around here I still have the reel-to-reel tape of that
concert.
One of my favourite music types is 60s folk. I ripped some of my
lesser known albums a few years ago and posted to a.b.s.m.folk. I
also have a folder where I'm trying to put together 45 A & B sides
along with the labels. I'm afraid there's more music and books and
movies and etc, etc then I'll ever be able to consume but one of the
benefits of retirement is that I've got time to try!
