When we read a good book, we "see" the story in our mind, clearer than
any TV show or movie could ever show it.
Turning that story into video is always a compromise, but if the story
telling is good, we gloss over the gaps with our imaginations.
This is becomming less and less necessary as CGI gets better and
better.
Consequently, what we marvelled at as kids now looks pretty crude and
rude by comparison, but like you, I remember sitting in a theater,
entirely into the story on the screen.
