Ah yes... the origin of "gnip".
It's really quite simple... years ago, back in the 90s, the Internet (more specifically Usenet)
was quite new (to the average user) and the term "ping" was being used at the
beginning of text posts rather than "attention:" or "Hey You", etc, etc.
Back then everyone was running trace routes to check their connection
speeds and this was done by "pinging" a remote device or server (and that
terminology was a leftover from the use of sonar).
Bottom line: after years my fingers got tired (carpal finger syndrome?) of
the same p i n g sequence so, to get the knots out of my fingers I simply
started (somewhere back around 2002) to type it backwards.
Hope that takes the mystery out of it <grin>
