Alio Die is a prolific, master soundscaper within the ambient and drone genres, and Sol Niger (black sun in Latin) is among his best works. It's such a peaceful 70 minutes of music, with material drawn from field and radio recordings, synths and natural instruments, nestled within an ambient framework.
At times it is like listening to the endless waves of the ocean on a tranquil beach, or picking up distant shortwave broadcasts, or observing scenes of everyday life in a bustling city. Sometimes there is a tribal/ritual feel (reminiscent of collaborations with Antonio Testa). But the overwhelming technique is one of ambient drones (not the noisy, abrasive variety) submerged in a radiant warmth.
So for those approaching the somewhat intimidating and lengthy discography of Alio Die and his myriad collaborations for the first time, Sol Niger marks as good a starting point as any. And if you care for this style of delicate, natural crafted ambience, I would also recommend Music Infinity Meets Virtues: Live in Prague 23rd May 2009 and The Flight of Real Image, and his collaborations with Amelia Cuni, Saffron Wood, Jack or Jive, Mathias Grassow, ... and Antonio Testa.
