Since its formation in 1969 the Munich-based Allotria Jazz Band has enjoyed a leading position in the German jazz world. In the past 13 years the band has cut 7 LPs as well as several singles. Next to participation in numerous radio broadcasts, the AJB has made more than 20 appearances on national and local TV.
Performances in all parts of Germany, guest gigs and concert tours in Austria, Italy, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon have helped to establish the Allotria Jazz Band's international reputation. Outstanding high points in this regard were the 1981/83 tours of the USA and Canada, culminating in the participation at the Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee as a top band.
The AJB plays dixieland and swing: behind a characteristically tight and original sound is an unmistakingly vital drive which listeners have always found compelling. Along with well-known jazz standards of the '20s and '30s and their own compositions, the band plays numbers derived from classical and pop themes. For the last 10 years the Allotria Jazz Band has been a house band in the Schwabinger Podium, where the group appears every Tuesday evening.

Together with his quartet also known as Mr. Jazzpower, a name actually demanding no special commentary. He has played in the big bands of Nelson Riddle, Henry Mancini, Kurt Edelhagen, Erwin Lehn and George Gruntz, just to name a few, and has accompanied many jazz greats on the road: Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Baden Powell, etc. Charly's experience in modern dixieland comes from years of playing with the Tremble Kids and Fatty George's Chicago Jazzband. Since 1982 with the AJB.
Dieter Lauterbach, tp, p, voc, arr.
Schoolteacher. Has played since 1970 parallel in jazz-rock and dixieland formations. Composer and arranger, joined the AJB as trumpeter in 1981.
Instrument-builder and music teacher. Until 1967 member of various dixieland bands in the Hamburg area, thereafter in Munich. Since 1982 with the AJB.
Achim Scherz, p, arr.
Music teacher. One of the founding members of the AJB. Achim has played with lots of Munich bands such as the Occam Street Footwarmers, Capitol Jazzband and the Big Old Swing Feet.
Rainer Sander, cl, as, arr., ld
Composer, bandleader and founding member of the AJB. Played during the '60s in various jazz groups in the Hannover and Frankfurt areas. Apart from his work with the AJB he has over the past few years appeared increasingly often in smaller combos as a swing solist in the style of Hucko and Goodman. Second profession: Physician.
Fritz Stewens, tb
From its beginnings an AJB member. Fritz is also brewery engineer and an active music teacher. There is hardly a Munich dixieland band in which Fritz has not played.
Physical therapist. For years as a bassist and guitar player in the Berlin jazz scene, having played with the Firestone Dixieland Jazz Band and the Storyville Jazz Band. Since 1974, with the exception of 2 years, a member of the AJB.
Kam 1977 zur AJB und jazzte zuvor mit den New Orleans Hot Dogs und den New Footwarmers. Legt Wert auf die Feststellung, dass er in Oberbayern geboren ist. Er ist somit der einzige Originalbayer in der Band.
Came to the AJB in 1977, having previously been with the New Orleans Hot Dogs and the New Footwarmers. Values the fact that he was born in Upper Bavaria, thus he is the only original Bavarian in the band.
