A concert inspired by the Coen Brothers' film, 'Inside Llewyn Davis,' which is set in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, featuring live performances of the film's music, as well as songs from the early 1960s. Performers include the Avett Brothers, Joan Baez, Dave Rawlings Machine, Rhiannon Giddens, Lake Street Dive, Colin Meloy, The Milk Carton Kids, Marcus Mumford, Punch Brothers, Patti Smith, Willie Watson, Gillian Welch, and Jack White, as well as the star of the film Oscar Isaac.
Reviews: The New York folk singer Jackson C Frank had a far more miserable and tragic life than the fictional Llewyn Davis of Coen Brothers film fame. Frank died in poverty at the age of 56 and although he is not on the official soundtrack of the wonderful film Inside Llewyn Davis, his music is featured in the concert record Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis, with a version of his song Blues Run the Game.
Frank's haunting composition is one of 34 tracks on the album and is sung, in an appropriately mordant and moving way, by Colin Meloy of The Decemberists.
That works particularly well with the peerless Gillian Welch, who sings a vibrant version of the traditional Will the Circle be Unbroken? as well as her own song The Way It Goes.
There are inevitable misses as well as hits (House of the Rising Sun is a bit flat) but there is enough variety from musicians such as The Secret Sisters, The Milk Carton Kids, the Punch Brothers and Marcus Mumford (also the associate producer) to keep things rolling along. The actors Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake play their musical part, too.
But this is stll an enjoyable album with two stand-out songs from the terrific Giddens, who shows she can do a traditional classic such as Waterboy (a favourite of Odetta and Fats Waller) along with the traditional Celtic number S'iomadh Rid The Dhith Om / Ciamar A Ni Mi.
