Der Spyra -  My Little Garden Of Sounds.txt
GENERAL INFORMATION
=====================
Album:     My Little Garden Of Sounds
Artist:     Der Spyra
Year:             1997
Genre:     New Age / Electronic / Ambient / Berlin School

DESCRIPTION
==================
Spyra is unpredictable. Not so much in terms of style (it's usually ambient music drawing inspiration from old school analogue EM/"Berlin school" from the likes of Tangerine Dream and, in particular, Klaus Schulze) as in terms of quality (brilliant at best, noodling and flavourless at worst). The Fax releases "Phonehead" and "Sferics", although prized by collectors, have failed to grab me. This inconsistency is probably why I haven't picked up the triple album "Elevator To Heaven" yet - I don't trust artists with bulimic output and a stubborn unwillingness to kill their darlings.

This little beauty, however, captures Spyra at his best. It was the first album of his that I heard and definitely my favourite alongside "Future of the Past". The music was apparently composed for an exhibition in Kassel in 1997 (Spyra has done a lot these), but fear not - the music sounds just as good at home.

There is bit of a concept here as the disc is split in two "zones" (A and B), each zone consisting of 3 tracks: 1) a piece with plenty of sequencing, 2) a quite abstract track and 3) a laidback/melodic finale. The sequenced tracks are the best ones here, as the 23-minute "Seasons" and the excellent "Seeds" in particular offer some rather brilliant pulsing music that ebbs and flows elegantly. However the "Garden" tracks are also very good slices of minimalist abstract atmospherics, the "Subterranean" one combining the electroacoustic-inspired soundscapes with more melodic elements in a not entirely sucessful fashion perhaps, but it's still a satisfying listen. The French-titled closers in each "Zone" are of the more slick variety but with some quality melodic synth action; nice stuff. Spyra's sound is very pure and smooth overall and perhaps a little frictionless; it doesn't offer dynamics as exciting and challenging as the best IDM. Still, of all "pure" old school-influenced Electronic Music out there, this is some of the best there is.
