Superb audience recording!
Minimal crowd noise.
The Gas Monkey Bar and Grill has an excellent room sound.
I have been a Y&T fan for years. However, they never visited Austin in the thirteen years that I lived there.
The band did perform in Dallas at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill one month after I moved up to North Texas.
However, I didn't find out about the show until it was in the rear view mirror.
Upon learning that Y&T would return to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, I made it a point to attend the April 2017 show.
I managed to talk my best friend Bubba into making the 30 mile trek from Arlington to Dallas for the gig.
Upon arriving at the venue, I learned that Lady Luck was on my side.
While waiting for Bubba to move his car to recently vacated parking spot in front of the entrance, a complete stranger walked by and asked if I had a ticket.
I said "No" because I was planning to buy one at the door. Unbelievably, my fellow fan offered his spare ticket, no strings attached.
I was very appreciative. Thank you, Jason!!
This was my first time taping a show at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill in an open air environment.
There were gusts of wind from time to time. I did have my standard CA-11 windscreens equipped.
However, if I had known that the tent usually over the venue would be down and that there would be frequent gusts, I would have brought my Church Audio "Dead Rat" windscreens along. Shame on me! Y&T were EXTREMELY loud so you may not hear any wind noise...
I did use RX4's Spectral Repair tool to remove audible wind noise during the between-song banter.
I did not attempt any noise reduction during the songs.
This recording definitely reflects the atmosphere of a fun springtime outdoor show!
I had originally set the recording level of my M10 at 7.0.
When Y&T came on, my recorder started to overload on the left channel.
In the darkness, I dropped down to 4.0 within the first minute of the show.
I probably could have boosted the recording level to 5.0 or even 6.0.
However, I did not want to take any chances.
Dave Meniketti's vocals cut through the live mix like a razor blade.
Dave's vocals alone would have caused my M10 to clip if I had recorded this show at a higher level.
Unfortunately, the sound engineer repeatedly adjusted the volume of the mix for the duration of the performance.
The opening and closing numbers were significantly louder than the middle portion of the set.
I attempted to correct this issue by using Clip Gain in RX4. Thank you for the step by step instructions, techtuts!
Being my first Y&T show, I was completely blown away by the band's musicianship and Meniketti's showmanship.
For a 63 year old guy, Dave's voice and stage presence were in fine form.
Nymann, Vanderhule, and Leigh were an extremely tight backing band.
The fact that Y&T performed for nearly 150 minutes on a steamy outdoor stage in the middle of the week impressed me as well.
The Dallas, TX setlist was a die-hard fan's dream as many deep cuts and rare tracks were performed.
Taking requests from fans near the end of the show was commendable!
I will definitely go out of my way to see this legendary hard rock outfit again!
My friend inquired about photographing the Austin show on Friday, April 14th.
He forwarded an email he received from Y&T's management.
I found the following statement amusing:
"Of course, video & audio recording are never permitted."
What a laugh! At this stage, all bands should appreciate the free publicity that tapers provide!
I had no trouble openly taping Y&T in Dallas.
I look at it this way...
If I can get away with openly taping both of Guns N' Roses Las Vegas 2016 comeback gigs, I can get away with taping ANYTHING!
I dedicate this recording to my departed friend Keith West.
Keith was a DJ at the rock station, Q 94.5 in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, and a HUGE Y&T fan.
Keith turned me onto the band in the 1990s.
