README re 'alt' graphics.txt
I was surprised to find that I had two different sets of graphics for this CD. One of them identified all the tracks as piano solos, but the other one claimed that trombonist Vic Dickinson was playing with Garner on "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and that a group called the "All Stars Orchestra" recorded "I Surrender, Dear" (Garner plus trombone, clarinet and drums).
I consulted the Bruyninckx discography, which says that Dickinson was on the 11/24/44 session that produced "It Had to Be You" (unissued) and "Sunny Side," but that Sunny Side was edited to remove Dickinson for release on Blue Note BLP5014! (He's certainly not there, and the tune ends very abruptly, so it obviously was cut before Dickinson's solo).
Bruyninckx also says that it was indeed the "All Stars Orchestra" of Bobby Pratt (tb), Barney Bigard (cl), Garner & George Wettling (d) that recorded "I Surrender, Dear" in December, but that the cut was edited for BLP5008. And sure enough, you can hear drummer Wettling in the background, but Pratt and Bigard are never heard, and this tune too ends awkwardly.
My guess is that Classics originally took their discographic info from a source that documented the original recording session but that didn't account (as did Bruyninckx's more recent discography) for the edits made by Blue Note; then they later learned the facts and edited their graphics to account for the missing musicians. The mp3 set I downloaded in 2006 (posted by Scarlatti) had the "wrong" graphics, while a later FLAC set I found on Bittorrent had the correct ones.
