I can say from personal experience that the answer is "It depends."
It depends on what you downloaded, when, and who (if anyone) was
watching at the time.
About a year ago, I downloaded a single episode of a TV show off a
torrent site. It was my very first torrent. I was so proud. Two days
later, I downloaded six other episodes.
A week later I got a warning letter from my ISP notifying me that
"multimedia giant company" filed a copyright claim against my IP address
because on "date/time" I downloaded "file name - TV show" from
"www.website.com". They warned that additional claims against my
account would result in termination.
Needless to say that I wasn't THAT desperate to watch TV. Of course,
that was also about the time I realized usenet had my TV shows as well.
So it hasn't been an issue anymore.
The point is that I got caught and warned for one download but not six
others. So, should you be worried about downloading from torrents?
Yes. It's a roll of the dice. It's all about who is watching when.
How lucky are you?
