If you want absolutely free and don't mind that you cannot post, try
XS Usenet (https://xsusenet.com/). They recently upgraded and now
offer pretty decent retention, but at the same time they implemented
a 25 GB per month download cap. I used them regularly for about 2
years before they changed and had good luck with them. You just have
to respond to a monthly email when your subscription is about to
expire and tell them that you don't want to upgrade, then click a
button to renew your free account.
I finally switched to a paid provider as finding a free one that
allowed posting has become all but impossible, and I didn't want a
download cap. So far the service with FastUsenet
(http://www.fastusenet.org/) has been good. They have very good
retention (I've grabbed stuff posted in 2010), the speed is very fast
and they have some good monthly packages to pick from.
