I don't particularly like to intrude and
poke my nose into things which are clearly
NONE of my business. BUT, I get frustrated
when I see the same issues happening over
and over every day. You can listen and
heed or ignore, you can tell me to go to
hell, or you can block me totally. I really
don't care!
So, here goes.
....
Everyone starts out as a newbie. To become
a NON-newbie you need to listen, pay
attention, and do research on your own.
NOBODY is going to spoon feed you all of
the time. It's not rocket science, and
anyone can learn. I did, and I'm by no
means overly intelligent.
....
Passwords: They have been given, over and
over, by multiple people. Like SmoothSlits
said: WRITE IT DOWN AND REMEMBER IT.
Shiina has used several methods. ALL have
been explained, in the clear, multiple
times.
....
Day x of y: This tells you that the post
is going to take multiple days. Be patient
and don't keep asking when it's going to
be finished, you've already been told.
....
WinRAR: Spend the $30 or whatever it is now.
It is a GREAT bargain. Pay once and get the
upgrades FOREVER for NO ADDITIONAL COST.
Keep YOUR copy up to date. It will also
unpack damn near anything you are likely
find in the wild (posted online). Most times
if you can't get the post to unRAR it is
because either it got downloaded badly (so,
download it again) OR it was made with a
newer version of WinRAR than you have.
If WinRAR says the file has an error, MAYBE
you told it the wrong password. So, try
a different password. Maybe you are trying
to unpack a multi-part package and do not
have all of the parts. Most times WinRAR
will give you a hint if the password is
incorrect. Also, WinRAR has the ability
to retain passwords. USE THIS FEATURE,
particularly if you can't remember things
(like passwords) and don't want to write
them down somewhere. I have no experience
with other versions of RAR archivers
other than WinRAR, so please don't ask.
....
Be nice. These posters are doing you a
favor. They are giving you something FOR
FREE that you probably cannot get elsewhere.
Don't ask for a repost just because you
don't see it listed in your header download
for today. The original post is probably
still there. Just reset your header time
to include a day, or two, or a month, or
maybe more depending on how long ago the
original posting was made, and then do a
re-download of headers. Most, if not all,
providers will retain things for multiple
months. Even GigaNews, which boasts years
of retention, will have things still on
their servers for a year or more. They
(GigaNews) will NOT likely have many things
complete more than 2 or 3 years old. They
had "something" go wrong a few years ago
that has never been fully corrected. Use
another server, like EasyNews, NewsHosting,
Eweka, etc. that truly HAVE long time
retentions. Eweka claims something like
3,000 days, but I can find most things
back at least 3,500 days and SOME things
more than 7,000 days. It is always a
good idea to have multiple servers. If
one doesn't have something complete,
then maybe the other will.
....
Don't piss people off! This should go
without saying, and probably belongs
with the "Be nice" paragraph. Even the
most even tempered person can only take
so much and will eventually just say
FUCK IT and bail out totally. Then
you've not only lost a source for YOU,
but also lost the source for EVERYONE!
....
Posters: I know "The Scene" is pretty
much dead these days, but the concepts,
rules, standards, etc. are still good
practice. I know, it takes a LOT of
work to make a package "compliant" to
all of these rules, and nobody in this
day and age really gives a fuck, they
just want their "stuff". But, if you
DO spend the time and effort to follow
all of these old, antiquated rules, you
do end up with a product that looks
nice and performs as intended. I'm
certainly showing my age, and I was
never a "member", but I did follow
releases way back then and appreciated
all of the work the Groups went to
in order to get a package out.
....
Other information: Want to automate
this process? It CAN be done. Try
this out, even just for information.
https://www.binaries4all.com/autorarpar/
I'm sure there MUST be an updated
program that will do this stuff. Like I
said earlier - "It ain't rocket science".
....
Enough for now.
....
I'll shut up and go away. I hope that
I have not stepped on any toes and
truly DO HOPE that maybe I've made
some of the lurkers out there aware
of how things SHOULD happen.
....
Good day!
