Compared to the German tanks, the T-34 was heavier (26.5 tons to the
Mark IVs 25), faster (31 mph to the Mark IVs 24), and better armed,
carrying a 76mm high-velocity gun. The 47.5-ton KV-1 tank, also
equipped with a 76mm gun, was invulnerable to almost any German weapon
except the famous 88mm gun. Few Soviet tanks, however, had radios, and
this made command and control in combat difficult, if not impossible.
Considering the puny antitank weapons available to most German
infantry units, these two new Soviet tanks were a nightmare waiting to
happen.
