Defending their positions inside a bomb crater German troops are
heavily engaged. By mid-November the cold was so bad that weapon
actions frequently froze-up. To make matters worse insufficient
supplies were reaching the men inside the doomed city. Consequently,
many soldiers were without adequate winter clothing which exposed
thousands of men to the dangers of frostbite and freezing to death.
