Here infantry follow a StuG.III assault gun across a field during the
opening phase of 'Blue'. Note the soldier in the foreground with an
aluminium machine gun cartridge case and a man carrying a metal
container on his back holding rounds for the gun.
Photo was taken in early Aug so this was definitely NOT the opening
phase of Operation 'Blue'- probably this is General von Wietersheim's
XIV Panzer Corps-This was the only Panzer Corps under 6th Army, and
consisted of 16th Panzer Division and 3rd and 60th Motorized Infantry
Divisions. In the face of this mailed fist the Russians withdrew over
the Don, towards the north and the east, in the direction of
Stalingrad.
