A projectile is being placed inside the 5cm barrel of the I.GrW36
mortar. An entrenching tool has obviously been used to place the
mortar into the soil and make it level for firing. The I.GrW36
intended role was to engage pockets of resistance that were beyond the
range of hand grenades. It was designed for high angled fire only (no
range and the limited effectiveness of its ammunition, which
were regarded as not heavy enough.
