In this rare photo a soldier mans a 20mm anti-aircraft gun on what was
probably one of the most important sectors of the eastern front in Jan
1942.
Just visible is the bridge over the Volga river in Rshew. Rshew at
that time, during the great Russian counter-offensive around Moscow,
was virtually surrounded and its capture by the soviets could have
eventually resulted in the whole of Army Group Center being surrounded
and destroyed.
