The term "dum dum bullet" was something I stuck in that paragraph to
hopefully describe what was meant by an explosive bullet.. After a bit
of investigation I found that the "explosive bullets" that so angered
the Germans were probably regular military rounds with the nose peeled
off and an "X" carved into the now flattened tip. What this did to the
round was cause it, upon hitting a target, to literally explode into
pieces on impact. I'm told the term 'explosive bullet' came about
because when one of these bullets hit a human target there was
literally an explosion of human tissue and blood. They caused massive
wounds when they hit a human target and were literally the difference
between a soldier being wounded or being maimed or killed.
According to some stories two of the main things German troops looked
for when searching newly surrendered prisoners was explosive ammo and
personal property of German troops. Having either meant instant death.
