The Spider Pool locale was a fanciful Hollywood Hills estate (a folly?)
assembled mostly by Mr. Jack McDermott back in the 1940s-1050s.
According to the tales, one of the Jack's jobs was to scout outdoor film
locations, and some of his property was used to construct movie set(s)
but to standards that made them more permanent than typical fake sets.
Part of the site was a tiled swimming pool area with a large tiled panel
that may have been a manmade waterfall. The panel depicted a huge spider
web and spider with a fly or wast entrapped. The estate was used for
years by pros and amateurs as a photo shoot site. It eventually was
forgotten but in 2004 a few of us nuts in this group began analyzing the
backgrounds of the old photos to see of the site could be discovered.
Many of the initial researchers spun off a Yahoo group, The Spider Pool
Research Group. Eventually, the location was discovered and though the
pool and almost all of the tiles are gone, the panel and some of the
attached tile walls were still there. The Spider Pool Research Group
still soldiers on today seeking info on other photo sites and
photographer and model information.
There used to be a website dedicated to explaining the Pool and its
history but I haven't looked for it in a long time.
