That, and if you sell something that lasts you won't be able
to sell as much of it.
Because I've always rode and preferred metrics, you used to
hear from the Harley guys all the time, "planned obsolescence". That's
what was wrong with Japanese bikes. Well, it wasn't planned
obsolescence, it was planned improvement. You can tag a lot of
products with that if you're stuck in a rut. Look at cars today.
People claim they're making them where the average shade tree mechanic
can't work on them anymore. They're wringing all they can out of
engines today.
Sorry, we were talking about commodities. A concrete company
could make that better product, but they may have to charge more
accordingly - because it may be more expensive and they know they
won't be able to sell as much(to the same project again). The way too
many businesses and businesses working with government run is by the
bidding process. The low bidder wins the contract. The specification
is put out for bid and companies vie for the contract. The low bidder
is ALWAYS going to win.
I was in this environment for about 20 years. It makes
companies hire low income wagers(Mexicans), do shitty work with shitty
materials, and others go flat out-of-business. But that's what we
have today. You see a lot of shit like this in storm damaged areas
too. These paper companies come in and sign people up for work
contracts that either never come or you wish they hadn't.
Hell! The World isn't just now getting fucked up - it's
pretty much always been this way. When you take the long view on
Man's history you can see we're going for the crash & burn. We
really, really need to find a way to another suitable planet so we can
start the process all over again.
Rant over.
