In 1902-1903, they were flying only a few above ground, and very slow.
So it's not a big crash anyway.
For being strapped or not, I sorta suspect that being able to jump out or at
least rear up was more safe than being tied up to the frame, engine, gas tank
and metal parts.
It's not like the flyer had a no-deformation cage to protect you.
