414 Squadron flew Challengers out of North Bay in support of air defence
training, both for the army and NORAD in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
They had on-board analytic software and variable chaff cutters. The
livestock and dairy farmers around Chatham, NB, with its Air Defence
Artillery School, used to complain that the animals were eating the fresh-
cut aluminized mylar with the grass, but apparently the stuff just passed
through their guts without harming them--as afar as we could tell. We moved
to the Combat Training Centre Gagetown and then everyone in Chatham was
complaining about the loss of business.
