With the friction heating and radiating, plus the engine exhaust at its
altitude, it was the brightest IR source visible from far away.
It was painted black and flying at an altitude where the sky is black, so yes it
had a degree of visual stealth. (questionably useful since there was no observer
up there anyway, but if you are a bad journo writing a sensationalistic article,
hey...)
