It never works consistently.
Several airlines in the 80s, including Lufthansa, had programs whereby 1st class
and top travelers would have their names and preferred newspaper recorded. The
purser was supposed to come to your seat before take-off, greet you by name and
hand you the newspaper.
It never worked reliably. Even when it works, you tend to think that it's
extravagant. But worse, about one third of the flights it doesn't happen, and
you wonder why they forgot you. (and what else they screwed up in flight prep)
Needlessly creating expectations that you're unable to meet consistently...
