It was. The existing B-57 could be modified faster than the X-16 could be
built from scratch. Something was needed to fill the void until the U-2
entered service. The RB-57's light, extended wings were only good for about
500 flying hours, and Martin had to modify the wings to extend their service
life. Still, it soldiered on, and the last time I saw one on active duty was
with the ANG at Tyndall AFB, Florida, in 1975.
