As has been said simply by others, LS never issued official csv's of
their files. Therefore, everything has been done second-hand and after
the fact. Will we ever have an error free collection? Maybe it's
better to ask, how close to the truth can we come?
Probably none of us will ever make a perfect LS csv compilation.
However, n@@dles has set the bar for the rest of us. I can only imagine
the countless hundreds of hours of work he put into getting his
collection to the state of near perfection it's in today.
Hopefully, over time, more of what's missing in his collection of csv's
will turn up so the state of the art can be advanced. We are fast
closing in on the goal of a complete and nearly error free set of csv's
for all of LS.
Here's the scoop on the csv authors:
Count Draculol may have ripped some web sites, but depended on the
concerted efforts of a group known as the "Hussy Mafia" in order to
create his famous index and csv set. Despite the best of efforts, a few
errors crept into his work. For LS collectors, the sad fact is that his
work was released while LS was still in its infancy so to speak.
Therefore it is woefully incomplete.
Bourne is an unknown entity. It is anybody's guess where he got his
files. What we can surmise is that either he or his source for the
files he indexed had a penchant to fix LS's "mistakes". While his files
themselves seem to be generally authentic, there are instances of images
being permanently rectified that were issued sideways by LS, and
multiple cases where renumbering occured to fit some logical sequence.
N@@dles got many of his files from post bust websites as near as I can
tell, and has received a certain amount of flak over that. His
cataloguing methods are unsurpassed for adherence to detail. He
personally examines all his images for the tell-tale signs of
authenticity. He only issues a csv for those sets where he is 110%
certain of their accuracy. Some sets are therefore absent from his
work.
Mr.bill never got a single file from a website. All his work has been
in comparing and sorting files gotten from usenet or otherwise. He
authored several computer programs to help in the work but all are for
his personal use only. His work is still ongoing.
Servic, if you've been around long enough, you know there are other
sources of csv's. These are made from what's handy, not what's good.
Sometimes you get lucky, but in one instance, a csv was issued
containing only a single 'cover' image and omitting the over 8800 other
images in the series. Haphazard work like this doesn't inspire
confidence. Stick with the four I provided and compare, compare,
compare.
