I agree. One possibility (but not really here, without creating
another group at this late date, which would be silly) is to use
a .d group for all discussions including thanks, as for instance
.scanners-post has always done.
Some of the good web boards that I mentioned, like VEF, use BBS
software (called vBulletin) that provides for that with a "Thanks"
button at the end of each post. I guess that's a pretty good way of
doing it. It certainly helps to minimize clutter in the threads.
I can't help thinking that Usenet posters who are really
psychologically dependent on a lot of feedback (and I don't mean to
knock it; to each his own) might do better there, where they can see
everybody's thanks pile up month by month.
I used to love Usenet and shun all of the web-based stuff, but lately,
because of the decline in Usenet posting, I've changed my tune.
Speaking as a leech, there's really a huge amount of kick-ass material
to be found on VEF, pornbb.org, etc. You just have to get to it before
the file-hosting providers "expire" the files. And, of course, use a
good Firefox extension to quickly snarf the collections of images that
are posted as such rather than as zips or rars.
