Hey, hold on, you two! You're both right! New Shimmer is a floor wax
*and* a dessert topping!
What we're all seeing is, as Moxy observed in a previous reply, a major
lack of posting due to the DMCA bullshit and the rabid copyright
trolls. (Follow <https://torrentfreak.com> for news on all of that.)
It's not this group that's going down the shithole. It's all groups.
The news is not all bad, just 99% bad. For instance, read this article
and laugh at *one* copyright troll getting what he deserves:

5-6m-after-failed-copyright-battle-150325/>
I think Gopher's expectation of some sort of feedback is reasonable in
general, or it would be *except* that this happens to be a very bad
time, or era, for Usenet binaries. And I don't think things are gonna
get any better.
The hardy folks (Hardy Boys?) who still post large amounts of goodies
are sort of like pioneers near the *opposite* end of the timeline.
They're working on the downslope of a long-term trend, as Usenet fades
away. Those of us consumers who continue to stop by occasionally to
see what's going on definitely say "Thank you" to all of them for all
of their posts, whether we happen to download any particular batch of
goodies or not. But for posters to depend on thanks would be foolish
now.
Many folks are into p2p, I guess mainly torrents now. I happen not to
be, for various historical reasons (I also happen to be on the
downslope of my own collecting career), but that doesn't mean that's
not a good direction to go in. If it works for you, then do it
(protected by a VPN). Sure, you don't get the same kind of community
that you get in the Usenet groups, but then times change and people
move away and any community, real or virtual, can disintegrate over the
years.
I'll also mention one other thing that contributes to the Usenet
decline in a much smaller way. Some time, if you haven't done so yet,
take a close look at the various good web sites for pr0n, including
(but not limited to) vintage-erotica-forum.com, intporn, pornbb,
planetsuzy, famousboard, peachyforum, forumophilia, and the
"non-content" site freeones.com for links only (limited shelf life).
You might find that one or two of those are pretty good for your
purposes. For example, so far I'm really into VEF, and I recommend it.
Also, intporn.org has a couple of long threads of 80K Archives and N&H
material ... yeah, ancient stuff now, but possibly still of interest.
That's just one example. Because the files are hosted on the
file-locker sites, sometimes the links are dead by the time you get
around to using 'em, but that's just something you have to deal with in
that different medium. It's analogous to Usenet posts having a long
but less-than-infinite lifetime on the NNTP servers.
Just FWIW, folks. Remain calm. It's not the end of the world *yet*.
That's around the corner. If you wanna post, then post. If not, then
don't. We consumers say thanks to all of the posters for everything so
far and everything that's to come. And it's true that there is no need
to get egotistical about it. Try to take the long-term view instead.
