Not to whine but I had the same thing happen some time ago. Used a
program called "EASEUS Photo Recovery". It works great, so good in
fact I paid for it. Got a brand new WD 1 TB drive, put all the pics
on that single "new" drive and went about installing all the OS
and stuff. When I went back to it the "new" WD had a physical melt
down. I contacted WD and they said nothing could be done and just
gave me a replacement drive. Seems that insuring the quality of
HD's is like building anything else. The last 5% takes 95% of the
effort. Investigation revealed that WD has a high HD failure rate and
they are fine with that. Seems it is cheaper to just replace the junk
than to improve the quality of their product. Used to go with
Hitachi but they have been sold to WD. Now it is Toshiba (never
had one go bad) but they may be on the verge of going to WD as
well. That leaves only Seagate Technology, including its subsidiary
brands Maxtor and Samsung. I will never again use WD. Just looking
around it seems that WD HD fails are real common and it is probably
safe to assume that that their corporate strategy of cost over
quality will dominate their aquisitions eventually.

Bottom line - Avoid WD drives and EASEUS Photo Recovery is
great for bringing back lost pics.

Take Care.
