I'm losing my second Seagate Expansion drive in under a year and want
 to rethink my options.

Fortunately this time I can at least still read the directories so I
can try to replace what I've lost.  (The files however are unreadable
-unplayable, and Windows disk manager wants to initialize the disk).
The last time about 8 months ago, I wasn't aware of the problem until
the disk was completely unreadable, so I'm not exactly sure what's
 missing from that drive.

Before I started saving videos to external (and internal) hdd's I was
burning everything to dvd and none of that has been lost.  But that
 was just too much work.

Now I realize I have to have backup copies of at least the more
 important files.

I was considering a raid 5 array of 4 large hdds figuring that if one
disk failed it could be replaced and everything would be okay. But
then as I looked into the costs and reviews at newegg and finally
realized that everything could be lost if the raid controller failed
or more than one disk had a problem, I started to think it might make
more sense to just use external hdds as backups and keep them offline
until one of the originals failed and not use Seagates anymore.

Oddly I have not had any problem yet with any of the internal hdds I
also use to store videos and some of them are much older than 5 years
 old, though most are Hitachis.

Am curious how others are storing their videos and what sort of backup
 systems are being used.
