My ranking number is totally subjective. As some of you may know, I have a strong liking for pre-1960 movies. This is ranked #57 in my Mystery/Crime category because of all the 1930s and 1940s Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, and similar movies. The ranking number would be much higher in an objective list.
I was tempted to put this in my War/Military category. I guess any time you see a lot of swastikas and German World War II military uniforms, the temptation is to consider a War movie. This movie has that, as well as some combat against partisans. But I think you will agree that this is really a murder investigation movie.
Could the story depicted in this movie really have happened? I don't know. I tend to believe that Nazi occupyers could do anything they wanted, to whomever they wanted, in any fashion they wanted. I tend to think that a German soldier, especially a General officer, would have been free of any criminal consequences. Especially in 1942 Warsaw.
Still, this movie has some great actors. As with most movies, it should not be judged as to historical accuracy. It should be judged as to entertainment value. Hope you enjoy it!
