 Old Geek asked me to pass this info on to you.
 He thinks that this may help you with your problem. I tend to agree
 with him. See what you think.
 Perhaps he can make an image of the disk and recover from there, that
 
 example.
 
 How about booting from a live cd of linux  like knoppix and see if
 error 36 goes away.
 
 I have had success vacuum sealing a drive and putting it in a deep
 freezer overnight, then take it out and hook it up. The cold shrinks
 electrical connections (circuit boards) if that is where the failure
 is.
 
 I suspect from what he is saying that the disk is going bad. Perhaps a
 disk recovery program?
