My definition of closed group:
"Any group that a small number of posters dominate, and who interact
(apparently) privately, to affect a consensus prior to making it
public".
Having said that, I would expand -
1. There is nothing wrong with a closed group. In fact, it often takes
such a group to create a good usenet group for all.
2. I am not angling for inclusion in such - too cranky.
3. I have watched a number of groups - abme, abmp80's, abm - to name a
few, tear themselves to shreds over the falling out of the members of
said groups. Some recovered, most did not. Whispering campains work
best in the shadows.
4. Not connected, but one I haven't seen here -
spammers can not be elimanated (again' the law most places to hang
'um), but enough complaints to the NSP involved cause those handling
compaints to decide the money the spammer pays them is not worth it.
Spammer told to stop posting to THAT group, or filtered by NSP to that
group so staffer can go back to his nap. Been there, seen it happen.
Need about 30 complaints.
back to posting. Anyone want to see a sample of the way Usenet video
was first done? Got one set of Multimedia Madman's if you are.
