I did exactly the same thing and for the same reasons.
Now, I don't use compression at all. I just use it to split files but,
as I mentioned before, it is tradition. So I continue to use rar.
No version of winrar, to date anyway, expires. You will get a bug
message but that is all.
I put ver 5.2 on 1 of my systems a while back and the trial period
expired but the program continues to work...
