Hi sns, just an FYI, don't bother with a VPN if you are going to post to
Usenet because it will not help at all. *IF* the powers that be go after a
poster then they will go to your News Service Provider (NSP) for the
details, the nature of Usenet means that requires a unique login and it is
from that the poster's details will be found. Hiding behind a VPN (which
only masks your IP address) is useless because you're posting under your
login details, meaning whatever details you created the account with can be
handed over.
I've no wish to scare you from posting because I agree with Me@Here.com,
what you are posting will not draw any attention, it is the scene releases
that they are now targeting with a vengeance.
Basically the ONLY reason to use a VPN is to mask your location and IP
address, super handy for torrents and sites that are geo-blocked, for
instance I live in country A and with a VPN I can appear to live in country
B thus allowing me to stream video from country B's free TV stations
assuming they have video on demand...personally I use it for streaming
sports in various countries and torrents, but for Usenet, useless.
Other things to consider:
1). Read the Terms and Conditions for both your NSP and VPN...how long do
they keep log files, who will they give those log files to upon demand and
how much pressure before they hand over the logs?
2). What country does the VPN or NSP reside in, NOT their servers but the
owner of the company...a quick whois lookup will let you know, USA is the
worst for takedowns and info trading but law are different from country to
country obviously.
3). Do some searching, read a few relevant forums, TorrentFreak is pretty
good, even if you're not after torrents their forums contain valuable info
for all things secure ;)
