Not every widowed 70-year-old is lucky enough to have a daughter willing to
provide him with a home in his declining years, and not every daughter is
*un*lucky enough to have a father as awkward, cantankerous and mischievous as
Tommy Butler...
Comedy veteran Jimmy Jewel stars as Tommy, a retired railway worker who goes
to live with his long-suffering daughter, Vera, when his home is demolished.
While his son-in-law, Brian, hardly welcomes the new domestic arrangement,
Tommy, having left all his old friends behind, feels particularly lost --
until he strikes up an unlikely friendship with 12-year-old tearaway, Charlie
Harris.
The two quickly become inseparable pals, and share fun, drama and adventure,
good times and bad, over the next four years, as Charlie grows from a snot-
nosed kid into quite the young man.

Charming, funny, and at times touching little series from Across the Pond. I
first discovered it several years ago as so-so quality TV-Rips found on the
Usenet, then later on stumbled upon some better-looking DVD-Rips on a private
torrent tracker. Then Network had a 50% off blowout sale on nearly their
entire catalog, and I was able to pick up all four seasons on DVD at a ridic-
ulously low price :)
I've still only watched three of the episodes (from Seasons 1 and 2), but
each one was quite entertaining and I found the characters to be engaging.
Young Charlie is very easy on the eyes and is a great little actor, with the
material he was given to work with. The interactions and relationship
between he and Tommy feel natural and authentic, not strained at all.
Note that in the Pilot episode, Gary Williams portrayed Tommy's young friend
Hawkins is a much better actor, but Gary was obviously younger than Charlie
when he appeared in the Pilot.
A Tip: I've found that the "Bob" Deinterlacing setting makes this series look
best to me. It gives it that authentic 70's Live-TV look. Try it and see if
you don't agree. In VLC hit SHIFT + D to cycle through the different
deinterlacing modes until you come to Bob, then hit "D". VLC's default mode
is "Blend," which is (to my eyes, anyway) a bit too soft for this video).
