I discovered this 1949 gem of a film back in 2010, and it left an impression
on me after watching it. I'm a sucker for a good 'old' movie, but this one
has a heart and a style that should appeal to just about anyone.
I can't say enough about 8-year-old Gordon Gebert's performance (his first in
I saw only one brief spot where he seemed to stumble with his lines, and he
started to laugh which rescued the scene so no cut was necessary.
The other 'supporting' cast (Gordon was the Star to me, of course ;) ) also
did an admirable job with their roles; Robert Mitchum, whose 'dry' type of
acting was spot-on for this role, Janet Leigh turning in just the right comb-
ination of charm, independence and motherly love, and Wendell Corey as the
on-again, off-again suitor.
I've definitely added this one to my yearly holiday 'must-watch' films list,
and think that you should, too!
