A modern-day (well, it was modern in 1967...) retelling of the classic fairy
tale that mixes live-action and Hanna-Barbera's magic animation.
The adventure begins when young Jack trades his cow for some magic beans from
the peddler, Jeremy Keen. The beans sprout a beanstalk high into the clouds,
and Jack and Jeremy climb it to discover a giant, a goose that lays golden
eggs, and Princess Serena who is trapped in a harp by a magic spell and can
only be released by a kiss.
Gene Kelly paired up with animation powerhouses (and familiar friends) Will-
iam Hanna and Joe Barbera to produce this magical, musical blend of live-
action and animation that's chock-full of showstoppers courtesy of composers
James Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn. Gene is on hand to lend his voice and dance
to the proceedings as Jeremy, the magical bean seller. Bobby Riha debuts as
young Jack, while Ted Cassidy lends his voice to the Giant. With help from
costume design by Theobold Holsopple and Hal Mohr handling the camera for the
live-action sequences, the viewers' disbelief is charmingly suspended with
delight. And Gene's song-and-dance numbers don't hurt!

From a former Blog post:
Waaaay back in 1967, a struggling, little-known dancer with a modicum of
hoofing skills named Gene Kelly landed a co-starring role with the Mega-Star,
Bobby Riha in a Made-for-TV production of "Jack and the Beanstalk." Well,
this catapulted Mr. Kelly's career tremendously and made him a Star on his
own. (yes, folks I'm only kidding - I DO know who Gene Kelly is :-P )
The brainchild of Kelly and the legendary animation team of William Hanna and
Joseph Barbera (maybe you've heard of them, as well?), this feature melds
live-action singing, dancing and storytelling with the classic fairy tale
characters of the Giant, the Goose that laid the Golden Eggs, and the Singing
Harp, and adding in some new faces, like a pair of dancing Woggle-Birds and
an army of marching and singing mice, all in glorious animated color!
Little Bobby Riha is a pure joy to watch as he sings and dances alongside
Gene Kelly (and holds his own, thankyouverymuch!). Formerly we could only
find this as an *adequate* TV-Rip, but this long-overdue, much clearer and
brighter DVD was released in 2015 by the good folks at Warner Bros. This is
one DVD you'll be glad to have in your collection, I guarantee it, or I'll
refund twice what you paid me to get it! :)
