"I sleep with men for money," explains Hebe. When she was a teenager she was
rejected by her family after she became pregnant by a man she encountered dur-
ing a festival in Italy; a man she can't remember. Now at 30, with no other
skills, she makes ends meet and pays her son's school fees by cooking for eld-
erly ladies and sleeping with a small syndicate of men, her "peacocks."
When her son, Silas, begs off their holiday time together so he can go sailing
with a friend's family, Hebe goes back to cook for one of her favorite ladies,
and ropes in the lady's nephew as a new client. Jim, a dealer in antiques,
spots Hebe on the street, and as he takes an interest in her, his elderly
friend Bernard tells him what he knows about her.
Silas, meanwhile, finds that his friends' parents are not particularly happy
to have a bastard along on their holiday, and heads for home. Inquiries about
a father his mother doesn't even know the name of is a continuing source of
grief for him.
Serena Scott Thomas is perfect as the free-spirited and unconventional Hebe,
and Tom Beasley is particularly appealing as her son, Silas. There's a cute
scene where Bernard urges Silas to try on a necklace and tiara, saying
"There's not many women who can wear one of these with conviction, and even
fewer boys, but I think you might be one of them." A pleasant television pro-
duction full of unconventional morality, based on the novel by Mary Wesley.

I am posting two DVD covers, one from the Odyssey release, and the other from
the Network release, because I like the front from the Odyssey one better.
For the more prurient among you, you might want to pay particular attention to
the scene with the boys in their bedroom, starting at the 44:28 point, where a
"Wardrobe Malfunction" precipitates the showing of a bit more of one of the
lads than was contained in the script, methinks... :devil:
