Flaxton Hall. Today it's in ruins, and to find it you must wander away from
the beaten track and across the rolling hills of Yorkshire countryside. It
stands now remote and quiet, but could these bricks speak - what tales they
would tell...
Now one of the more interesting stories of its long history, happened over a
hundred years ago, in 1854. Even then the house was old, but things were very
different in those days. And Flaxton Hall was the biggest, grandest place in
the district. But in the summer of 1854, tragedy -- Joseph Flaxton, the old
Squire, died. He was laid to rest in the nearby churchyard, and it was noted
that 'not many attended his funeral.' And upon his gravestone was engraved a
strange epitaph:
The curfew tolls the knell of parting day
The lowing herd winds slowly o'er the lea
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way
And leaves the world to darkness and to me
It was only after the funeral that the full extent of his eccentricity was
learned. For when the will was read, it was found that Joseph Flaxton had
made a joke - the first --and last-- of his entire life.
He'd left Flaxton Hall to a relation. His great-nephew, Jonathan; a boy of
only 12-years-old - whom he'd never, ever seen. So the lad finds himself in
the role of Squire of Flaxton and Master of the Hall...
So begins Yorkshire Television's long-running, fondly-remembered children's
drama which traces the Fortunes and Festivities, Harrows and Hijinks of four
generations of the Flaxton family across the ages.
Series 1:
The adventure begins in Yorkshire in 1854, as young Jonathan Flaxton and his
mother take up a mysterious inheritance: a bleak, supposedly haunted hall
thought to conceal a wealth of treasure within its imposing walls.
Jonathan and his new friend, apprentice chimney sweep Archie Weekes soon enc-
ounter all manner of peril -- from smugglers, villains and spies, to super-
stitious villagers and ghostly apparitions. With father reported missing in
the Crimean War, the family's situation becomes increasingly desperate, but
it's clear that Jonathan and his mother are not the only ones seeking the
Flaxton 'fortune'...
Series 2:
Set some forty years after Jonathan Flaxton and his friend Archie Weekes vied
with the avaricious Sir Peregrine Stilgoe in a quest for the hall's hidden
treasure, this series centers around Peter Weekes, son of Archie and Sarah
Weekes, and David Stilgoe, ward of Sir Tarquin Stilgoe, Sir Peregrine's son.
Sir Peregrine has died in a coach accident, and Stilgoe Lodge has passed to
Sir Tarquin, a man as ruthless as his father and equally an enemy of the
Flaxtons. This new adventure sees the boys searching for the Flaxton heir,
who mysteriously vanishes as a new threat to the family home emerges: the
valuable seams of coal that lie below its foundations, and whose whereabouts
are known only to Sir Tarquin...
Series 3:
The story of the Flaxton boys moves on to a third generation, as the series
finds the two young friends encountering further mystery and peril in and
around the fictional West Riding village of Carliston.
It is now 1928. Jacklin Flaxton has been killed in the Great War, leaving his
widow, Jane, to run Flaxton Hall. Arriving home from boarding school for the
summer holidays, their son, Jonathan, accompanied by his friend, William,
learns that the Vicar plans to convert the now-derelict Stilgoe Lodge into an
orphanage. But while the boys are happy to help, a series of apparent haunt-
ings forces several workmen to flee the Lodge in terror...
Series 4:
The Flaxton Boys' story concludes with the fourth series in the epic child-
ren's drama charting the adventures of four generations of a family at their
imposing manor house in a fictional Yorkshire village.
Seventeen years have passed since the previous series. It is now August,
1945, and Jonathan's son, Matthew, and evacuee Terry Nichols are the new
Flaxton Boys. As World War Two comes to an end, the soldiers who were
billeted at Flaxton Hall are preparing to leave. The evacuees, too, are on
the move -- all, that is, except Terry, who has no home to return to. He and
Matthew are not immediately the best of friends, but with Benjamin's return
from the Navy, a shared adventure brings them together.
