Based on the experiences of best-selling author Pat Conroy, this touching
drama unfolds during the summer of 1969. Conroy is full of youthful
enthusiasm and idealism. And he's just what the "good ol' boy" bureaucrats of
Beaumont County think they need to fill an empty teaching slot at all African-
American school on Yamacraw Island, off the coast of South Carolina.
Conroy is excited about this new challenge until he comes up against a brick
wall, namely the school's principal and his only colleague, Mrs. Brown.
Brown's legacy is the fear she instills in her students - a practice that has
gone unquestioned for years, until Conroy comes along with his more unconvent-
ional methods. Despite her disapproval, Conroy forges on, becoming possibly
the first teacher to truly get to know the students - their likes and dis-
likes, their hopes and fears.
As the bond with his students deepens, Conroy receives his own education about
the gap that divides all of them, including Mrs. Brown. Risking his live-
lihood --but never his principles-- he teaches his students valuable life
lessons and lays groundwork for the possibility for real change.

This is a 'remake' of sorts, of the 1974 "Conrack," which starred Jon Voight.
How does it 'compare' to the original? Well, after watching both films over
the course of a couple of days, I'd have to say that a direct comparison would
really not be fair. While both films are based on the novel, each has its own
style and vibe and highlights little things that the other doesn't.
I would encourage you to set aside some time and watch both adaptations. I
think you'll get a more rounded sense of the story that way :)
