Common abbreviations used in abma (alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks)
We tend to forget that there must be a lot of new users appearing on
USENET every day
Most of them will be computer-savvy and have lots of experience with
other communication
devices like mobile(cell) phones emails and many other things.
But occasionally an abbreviation used in abma will puzzle someone.
Here is my list, almost certainly abbreviated.
64 kbps
32/22 mono
These are recording qualities of the audiobooks. 64 kilo bytes
per second (kbps) is a common
and quite acceptable quality. 32/22 mono is roughly half the
quality of the 64kbps and it
is in mono not stereo
Attn, Att
these are short for Attention and are used to attract a
particular persons attention
eg Attn Joey: here is the Jack Reacher you asked for.

FYI
For Your Information
incomplete
Your readers info that a file is not complete and that you will
require some Par files.
jpg, JPG, jpeg, bmp (etc)
Commonly used abbreviations indication picture files.
KB, Kb, kb, MB, mb
The usual and common file sizes of kilobytes and megabytes.
m3U
These files are playlists which are recognised by most mp3
players and they will organise
a list of mp3's in media players.
mD5, sv, sfv
These are types of checksum files which show if the main files
have been corrupted.
They are not used as much as they were due to the wide us of PAR
files.
mp3
Is the standard method of compressing audio files after which
this group is named.
Mp4, M4a, M4b, AA, (etc)
Other methods of compressing audio and video files after which
this group is not named.
rar
I put this here with mp3, mp4 etc because it is a very common
type of posted file format on
Usenet and the internet. It can be dangerous as it is commonly
used to carry viruses and similar
malware. MP3 files cannot be compressed much so that the use of
rar is of no benefit and can be
very threatening. You may think I don't like 'em. You may very
well think that, I couldn't
possibly comment .... apart from advising against downloading
rar files in abma.
Anvi Smart Defender Pro v2.rar, ArchiTECH PC v8.0.12.rar are
particluar examples of files
which appear in abma from time to time and are 100% guaranteed
to contain viruses. Leave them alone.
nfo, txt
Info or text file with book information in it.
NMR
Not My Rip, this stands for, meaning "I didn't produce this mp3
file" - A useless excuse, just in
case there is something wrong with the mp3.
NR
New Rip. This is often used for older books which have been re-
ripped or re-mp3'ed.
NZB
A possibly useful file which retrieves Usenet posts from Usenet
servers.
This file format was invented by Newzbin.com which is why it is
called NZB
Most newsreaders will use NZB files to retrieve the whole of
multi-part posts
such as audiobooks. It saves copying the whole list of audiobook
files, especially
if you are informing someone that the book has already been
posted. The NZB file
will retreive the whole of the post if it is still on the
server. (up to 3 years now)
Par, Par2, Vol
Magic files which will re-assemble broken or corrupted postings
RE, re
Referring to, replying to
REQ
Request for a book or part thereof
TIA
Thanks in Advance message on a request
Unabr
Unabridged, just as the author wrote it.
Yenc
Method of coding for Usenet, of no interest these days but it is
still shown.
Wolken des Todes
Strafkolonie Erde
Herrscher des Kaos
A Warning (and usually the only one you'll get) that the post is
in a Non-English language.
Do not download unless you are fluent in that language.
I'd give you a piece of my mind, but I'm on the last one
