and compiler Michael Moehring's third project
for the new Jazzin'-series, Nova Ipanema - A
Brazilian Funk Affair, is dealing with the
Brazilian jazz-funk phenomena from the 70s and
80s, played by Brazilian artists with a little
help from versatile jazz greats like George
Duke, Cal Tjader, and Mark Murphy.
In those days outstanding legends like the
fusion-funk trio Azymuth from Rio De Janeiro or
percussionist/producer Airto Moreira created a
niche, that still plays a role in today's music
if you look at the massive influence to the
current 'Brazilectro'/'Nu Jazz' hype. They
turned the bossa nova- and samba-formula into a
next exciting direction: a pioneering jazz-funk
almagam with a strong Brazilian approach.
If you listen close to the new generation of
Brazilian musicians like Ed Motta, Bebel
Gilberto, Paula Lima and many others, I'm sure
you will find some of those music that is
presented here. It obviously paved the way for
people like Roni Size, 4Hero (check out their
excellent collaboration with an another
Brazilian pioneer Marcos Valle), Gilles Peterson
and Jazzanova.
Well, hard to describe the genre of this baby.
Actually its a mixture of some
Jazz/Brazilian/Blues/Funk/Ambient/Easy Listening
Tunes.
