Wow, where to begin with that question...
What app are you trying to play them with?
The one player that works with most files is VLC which can be safely
and legally downloaded for free at www.videolan.org with litte fear of
getting the wrong version since the site detects your OS in most cases.
If you are burning these to a disk and trying to play them in a DVD
player, many files will have to be converted in some way before you can
play them.
Not knowing what OS you use, I wouldn't know how to advise you as to
what app to use for conversion.
Some codecs are unusable with some apps, since they prefer you to buy
their "premiere" versions for more compatibility.
The more info you provide with your questions about tech matters, the
easier it is to help.
