OMG!, moving countries is a HUGE DEAL!!!! I'm sure there's a story there?
I used to run a similar setup to what you're looking at doing, had my guitar
feed straight in to any pedals which then fed in to the ESI-JULI@ sound card
on the PC, from there I'd use Native Instruments Guitar Rig for the Cab and
Amp tones (it also does effects but coz I had the pedals...). I seriously
love that program, it is so adjustable you can set the position of the Mic
(and Mic type) in front of the Cabinet, crazy! That then fed out to the
Peavey Classic 50 on the clean channel, once happy with the sound Guitar Rig
looked after the basic recording. It's basic but works well, laying down
multiple tracks you'd need something more robust like your mentioned Garage
Band or Band in a Box, but for the Cab & Amp tones it's tops.
Sadly I hardly play these days, so if I do plug in the old MTM1 in it goes
straight to the tube channel of the amp, I still have all the hardware of
course, it just doesn't get used.
Lol, writing this has made me keen to bust out "Song #1" with the volume on
