Giganews, for one, provides SSL as a built-in service (for an extra
monthly charge). Anything here (even an uncontroversial pure text post
like this) I do via Tor.
As I've said before, you'd be naive to think the FBI doens't already
know every newsgroup where illegal or near illegal content is being
posted. Groups are scanned regularly and note taken of any new ones or
previously inactive ones where the number of posts suddenly zooms up.
Also they scan the Usenet universe for tell-tale keywords like "pthc",
which has occurred in this group a number of times.
So whatever@ is telling them nothing new and the risk of posting has
not increased. So long as you take reasonable precautions (such as
working through Tor) you'll still be safe from being individually
identified.
But then, I may be a cop trying to lull you inot a false sense of
security :)
