 >Dunno about mercenaries, but civilian "contractors" aren't exactly rare.
 
 There is a very big difference between a civilian contractor maintaining
 equipment on a carrier and a naval aviator / war fighter providing CAS for
 United States Marines on the ground in Afghanistan.
