Birthright was a briefly published series and one of the last original
settings created before TSR closed its doors. While arguably not as
original as some of its earlier campaign worlds - such as Planescape
or Spelljammer - it had a much more cohesive setting that felt far
less patchwork than previous creations. With Players taking on the
roles of domain-ruling Regents, Birthright focused as much on
high-level political intrigue and strategic-level conflict as it did
on adventuring and dungeon-crawling. Unfortunately, the series only
saw limited popularity, largely because its gameplay and rules were a
departure from the core system and the political aspect made it more
difficult for new and young gamers to develop their own adventures.
Birthright encompassed roughly 35 published volumes, of which the
majority were single volumes but also included five box sets (and one
folio that was the equivalent save it didn't have an actual box :-).
The production levels of the books were also much higher than other
recent TSR releases, with lots of full-color and full-page images.
These are not new scans, but rather touch-ups of existing scans.
Honestly, most of the existing material was already in pretty good
condition and the major change I made was to paste the maps back
together and clean-up the bookmarks. These volumes are NOT OCRd,
largely because all the text is overlaid on background images and my
OCR program just basically threw up its hands and gave up. Several of
these volumes are also incomplete despite my best efforts, mostly in
the area of the supplemental material (especially in the area of the
"WarCards"). What is (and isn't) included is indicated in a "sticky
note" comment on the front page of each PDF. I can't say that these
are the "definitive" editions, but I'd like to believe each is a
little bit improved by my attentions ;-)
