First of all I want to express my gratitude to CxL for posting a straight rip of
the commercial dual-layer DVD. And also a big Thank You for doing a video capture
of the 2 scenes that were censored from the commercial version. An uncut tape of
this movie is not only very rare, it's also priceless. This project would not have
been possible without his invaluable contribution. So guys, if you want to thank
somebody, thank HIM, not me... All I did was "put the pieces together" basically.
This reauthored DVD will now fit on a normal DVD-R. The MPEG video was NOT
re-encoded (not re-compressed in layman's terms) and the picture quality of the
commercial DVD it came from is intact. The 2 censored scenes that were inserted
into the ripped movie are unavoidably of lower quality because of the source.
Furthermore, all the original menus and extras were also preserved. The ONLY
things that I took out are:
- the [FBI warning/Compliance certificate/Company Logo] video
- the arrow.com web site ad video
Both of which it's pretty safe to assume that *nobody* cares for anyway.
In a nutshell, you get the same DVD as the commercial version + 2 extra scenes.

application (Nero, etc..).

Technical Notes

Initially, the movie VOB files proper (VTS_01_x.VOB) were already too big to fit
on a normal DVD-R: 4.63 GB (4,972,832,768 bytes).
But since the film soundtrack was in PCM, I was able to save a LOT of space just
by converting it to AC3. The demuxed m2v (video) was 3.61 GB (3,880,216,420 bytes)
which is not too big at all but the demuxed PCM sound was 950 MB (996,401,004 bytes).
Almost 1 GIG just for sound!!!
The soundtrack once converted to AC3 (@192Kbps) was a mere 118 MB (124,549,632 bytes).
IOW, I saved a whopping 832MB(!!) by doing this alone. From there, I knew the movie
could fit on a DVD-R without having to re-encode the movie. This was the best break
in the entire project.
But I wasn't entirely sure yet if the space saving would be enough to be able to
include the extra scenes, all the menus and the picture gallery because the total
size of the (dual-layer) DVD-9 rip was 6.66 GB (7,152,492,544 bytes). So as usual,
I browsed though all the VOB files looking for stuff that I can discard without
losing anything essential.
It turns out that I found a HUGE amount of stuff that was not only expendable but
highly redundant. The fact that all the audio tracks on the DVD were in PCM made
the saving in space all the more considerable :-)
Here's a list of the "dead weight" I discarded:
- VTS_02_1.VOB:
[Copyright warning/compliance certificate/Arrow logo] video+sound.
Discarding this alone saved approx 50MB of disc space.
- VTS_04_1.VOB:
The "Trailers" button in the main menu link to the video in this VOB but they're
NOT trailers at all but merely an ad for the arrow.com web site.
Discarding this saved approx 120MB of disc space.
- VTS_07_1.VOB:
The "Satisfiers" button in the main menu link to a menu of 4 specific scenes of
the movie's female satifiers (805, 211, 345 & 903). Normally, a professional DVD
author would do this simply by making the button link to a specific scene in the
main title (VTS_01_x). Instead, the author chose to create duplicate copies of
those scenes into extra VTS'es which is incidentally the worst way to do it.
However, I am thankful for his wasteful authoring practices since it served my
cause quite nicely (for once) >:-)
This VOB contains a duplicate copy of the Hillary Summers (903) scene.
Discarding this saved approx 543MB (half a GIG right there!!).
- VTS_08_1.VOB:
Same situation as above but a duplicate of the Jodi Maxwell (211) scene.
Discarding this saved approx 292MB
- VIDEO_TS.VOB:
Yes that's right, that VOB that is usually so small in size in most DVD's. Well
in this case, it was a whopping 855 MB (896,913,408 bytes)!!. The reason is the
same as for the above 2 VOB's: VobId's 36 & 37 were duplicate copies of the Lysa
Thatcher (805) and Annie Sprinkle (345) scenes respectively.
Discarding this saved approx 870MB (damm near 1 GIG here!!).
Total space saving by eliminating dead weight is 1,875MB (close to 2 GIG's).
Add the 832MB saved by converting the sound to AC3 and the grand total comes to
2,707MB (this has GOT to be the most wasteful DVD I have ever seen).
Since the size of the original DVD rip is 6.66 GB (7,152,492,544 bytes), the total
space savings bring it down to a cool 3,953MB which well below DVD-R capacity.
I still had to insert the 2 scenes at that point. Fortunately, those were small
and did only increase that figure by 214 MB (224,709,253 bytes)
Note:
The Satisfier scenes work perfectly in the re-authored DVD. I simply linked the
buttons to their respective scenes in the movie (IOW the way it should have been
done in the first place).
Then I proceeded to make the cuts in Mpeg2Schnitt to insert the missing scenes.
Here again, lady luck was on my side and I was able to make reasonably clean cuts
and insert the 2 scenes at the very same spots where CxL had placed them in his
previous post (the video capture version of this movie).
After that, all I had left to do was re-author in Maestro which is the easy part.
The final size of the reauthored VOB files is 4.20 GB (4,517,711,872 bytes).
That's what I call a snug fit :-)
